Despite having found traction pretty quickly, everything that could have gone wrong did, from manufacturing mishaps to logistics catastrophes to the resistance and blatant racism we faced from the beginning. There were many challenges along the way, but probably none as difficult as when I decided to move to LA to launch Fly By Jing as a direct-to-consumer brand. What was the biggest challenge you faced when you were starting out in the industry? This winding road eventually led me to the realization that Fly By Jing could be a modern Asian food brand that helps introduce incredible Sichuan flavors to kitchens around the globe. That led to writing about food for international publications, learning to cook with Chinese masters, opening a restaurant called Baoism in Shanghai, and launching a traveling pop-up restaurant that I named Fly By Jing. I started to learn everything I could about Chinese cuisine and launched a food blog where I chronicled my adventures. As I started to reconnect with my family there, exploring the country’s food became a way to reconnect with them and my heritage. I got into the food world when I moved back to China in my 20s for a tech job. I also staged in a restaurant, which is a great way to learn on the job without going to culinary school. I never went to culinary school, but taught myself to cook by reading cookbooks and practicing. I went to business school, somehow a compromise between my parents’ wishes for me to become a doctor and my desire to go to art school. I worked for Gillette and CoverGirl in the Canadian market.ĭid you go to culinary school or college? It was great training to become an entrepreneur because it required you to act as a mini-CEO of a brand, working with many other across the company, like sales and R&D, to grow the top line. I had many part-time jobs growing up, but my first full-time job out of school was as a brand manager at Procter & Gamble. What was your first job? What did it involve? I thought I would try a lot of things and would eventually find what was right for me. Jing Gao: I always knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur, but didn’t know what kind of business it was going to be. In the following interview, Gao discusses the challenges of moving Fly By Jing to Los Angeles, relying on customer support during rough patches, and taking Chinese food out of the “ethnic aisle.”Įater: What did you originally want to do when you started your career? Now, she plans to continue growing, with her sights set on adding more items from regional Chinese cuisines to her repertoire. The success of the Kickstarter led Gao to expand the brand with products like zhong sauce, frozen dumplings, and finishing oils. Nearly 1,700 backers pledged $120,000 in funds. Gao launched a campaign on Kickstarter to raise capital for production and gauge if there was interest in the U.S. As the market for chile crisp heated up in the last two years, Gao bet that people would be willing to pay more for higher-quality ingredients and better taste, and she was spot-on. The brand’s numbingly spicy Sichuan Chili Crisp is its most popular offering, despite the fact that it’s more expensive than the classic Lao Gan Ma brand that many consumers know. She opened a restaurant in Shanghai and then ran a traveling pop-up that eventually evolved into Fly By Jing, a modern Asian food company bringing flavor-packed pantry staples to kitchens around the world. After working in brand management and tech, Gao pivoted to food as a way to reconnect with her family and her heritage. That’s why Jing Gao - a native of Chengdu, China, the capital of Sichuan - built a business around it, transforming her own career in the process. The Chinese hot pepper oil, which usually gets its signature crunch from fried shallots and garlic, significantly upgrades anything it touches, from noodles and soups to eggs and ice cream. Today’s installment: Jing Gao.Ĭhile crisp has transformative powers. In How I Got My Job, folks from across the food and restaurant industry answer Eater’s questions about, well, how they got their job.

When the creature appears, it is under no compulsion to behave in any particular way. Or is it more neutral like what you might get with Planar Ally, where The summoned creatures are friendly to you and your companions. Is it positive like that of, in your example, a conjured animal, where: Take a good look at all the text of the spell, and try to figure out the attitude of the creature towards its summoner. They're bound by the spell to obey your instructions, but if you don't give any, it makes perfect sense for them to defend against whatever would attack them but otherwise to be as passive as they can get away with, they don't really have an incentive to do anything else. Bear in mind that most of those type of spells works by whisking away some spirit, presumably from another plane, from whatever else they were doing, putting it into the form of whatever you summoned and dropping it right in the middle of some combat that they don't really have a stake or interest at. I don't think it's as unreasonable as you think. If you don’t issue any, it takes the Dodge action and uses its move to avoid danger.Īs the former seems to be primarily used in PHB and the latter is used in its place in similar spells by later sourcebooks, I am be inclined to believe the intention was to clarify "defend themselves from hostile creatures" into "takes the Dodge action and uses its move to avoid danger" and that's how I would treat it unless there is some other action specified in the spell block. If you don't issue any commands to them, they defend themselves from hostile creatures, but otherwise take no actions. It's not defined well but there is a precedent for the Dodge Action There needs to be an action cost on the summoner's end to balance out all the new possible Attack Actions that come with adding more creatures to the fight. Now that Bonus Action is available for something else healing word, misty step, second wind, two-weapon fighting, etc. But when you have one, that can be very important (extra attacks, spells, healing) all that do not interfere with your normal Action for your turn.īy changing all these summons to say, "You can go ahead and attack freely," you are giving back that extra slot for characters. The reason that conjured creatures, summoned creatures, the steel defender, the wildfire spirit, the homunculus servant, and any number more all include a variation on the phrase ".but the only action it takes on its turn is the Dodge action, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take another action," is that there needs to be a cost to the owner/summoner.īonus actions are not a given, you only can take one if a feature says you can. The high, adjustable bolsters on the sport seats didn't look that good. Perhaps it was the interior that spoiled the car. Unusual for those times, its rear wheels were placed behind the C-pillar and made the car look more advanced than its competitors. A grille on the lower side of the bumper plus two air-intakes right under the hood kept the engine cool. On the hood, it featured the Thunderbird badge and a pair of slim, horizontal headlights. Just by looking at it, it was considered a good competitor for the BMW 6-series. But those didn't look too good next to the green LCD lettering placed on the bottom. A good thing was the new look for the instrument cluster, which featured four semi-circular dials, with red needles on white faces. The retro-design style could have been seen on the front fascia, with its big and round headlights and the flat, chromed grille with square-grid mesh. The design was inspired by the first-generation of the T-Bird. When it unveiled it, the whole market was enthusiastic, but that enthusiasm didn't last long, and the T-Bird sunk with slow sales. It takes place in a blue-collar bar, where ants dance in happy conformity to the strains of "Guantanamera," while that anarchist Z and his partner (Princess Bala in disguise) improvise. The score, made up of old standards, does, however, enhance one of the movie's wittier episodes. Sorry, "Antz" has no show-stopping song and dance numbers, no catchy melodies and no love songs either. It's surely not aimed at children, given its grotesque battle scenes, which might have been modeled on those between the Nazi youth and outer space bugs in "Starship Troopers." And an ant blathering on his wee analyst's couch seems equally unlikely to appeal to youngsters who tend to crack up at the gas-passing slapstick of the comic duo in "The Lion King." Hakuna matata. But then he hasn't got much to work with in this self-serving, product-plugging wisp of a script. Without those owlish eyes so bewildered behind those horn rims, that scrawny body and the rest of the preposterous package, Allen is just another whiner. Allen, as an ant in analysis, is frankly more annoying than amusing. But not Z (voiced by Woody Allen), the neurotic, nattering, narcissistic exception. It is the Ant Way, and most accept the system, which has served the species so well lo these thousands of years. In "Antz," the Queen (regally voiced by Anne Bancroft), Princess Bala (voiced by Sharon Stone) and their courtiers lounge about in the upper realms, while the drones, workers and soldiers labor in the tunnels deep below. The scene, like some aspects of the story, recalls "Metropolis," a social allegory about a tyrannical ruling class and the workers who toil in the totalitarian underground. These critters look more like those big-eyed, Gumby-like gray aliens On the other hand, the anthill itself is a spectacularly animated series of caverns, a subterranean realm humming with industry. Although the movies share similar story lines – idiosyncratic ant saves the hill from enemy hordes – Disney's bugs look funnier, funkier and more traditionally cartoonish than the more authentically drawn arthropods of "Antz." The animation might not have been such a problem, however, if these creepy crawlies had more appealing character traits. The first of two computer ant-imated features for fall, this little flick from DreamWorks is beating Disney's "A Bug's Life" to the screen by several weeks. While "Babe" made you want to give up bacon, "Antz" will make you reach for the Raid. Both of the brands we bought were complete junk and wound up getting tossed out. My 6 year old absolutely loves bubbles so several months ago I saw premade bubble wands at the craft stores and purchased them for about $4 or so as a birthday gift. The person manning the booth was sweet enough to walk me through the process of making these bubble wands and I can assure you it is so easy and so cheap! So I have always just grabbed the bubble wands from the Dollar Store and called it a day.īut we recently went to an outdoor festival and spotted a booth with a bucket and giant bubbles. □ I have seen tutorials for giant bubbles in the past that just seemed too hard to bother with or required buying wading pools and hoola hoops and other things I simply don’t want to buy and have cluttering up the house. You see my brain simply can’t handle complicated when it comes to homemade projects. But to be honest when it comes to DIY or crafts if something seems overwhelmingly complicated or expensive- my eyes roll back into my head and my brain hits the mute button. My girls squealed with delight when they got big, bouncy bubbles and when they were able to catch a bubble for a few seconds before it burst - not at all like the usual mixtures!īut I will warn … these are best blown outside, where both the soap and corn syrup will do less damage from any residue left behind any bubble “pops!” that occurred on patio furniture I wiped off with a damp rag just to be safe. This giant bubble wand is something I have oohed and aahed over many times in the past. You can make HUGE bubbles this way!Īs you can see from the pictures, we had a blast. The straws become your handles and you dip the string into your bubble tray (a shallow tray or pan works well). □Īnd while we didn’t do it this time, as a kid I was taught to make your own wand by lacing string or yarn through two straws, then tying off the string once laced through. Surprisingly, the metallic ones worked best since the fuzzy ones absorbed a LOT of the solution and wasted a lot of it by dripping off. We used both the standard fuzzy pipe cleaners and the ones with the more metallic look and feel. Just mold the pipe cleaner around the cookie cutter and twist it off with the remaining pipe cleaner (excess becomes the handle). After my initial eye-roll about the wands being MIA, I decided they could make their own wands instead and it really worked out great - all done with items you’re likely to have on hand already.įor the wands, all you need are some pipe cleaners and cookie cutters in basic shapes (we used a star and a heart since they were easy to mold). I hadn’t planned on making our own wands till my oldest mentioned she couldn’t find their usual stash of plastic wands of every size and shape. The first two batches worked okay for little bubbles, but not to make the fun kind that bounces off blades of grass instead of being popped by them nearly instantly. I’ll be honest … I tried a couple of bubble recipes before settling on this one, which was my third different batch. This post solves both those problems: Make your own bubble solution AND your own bubble wands! Problem solved my friends! And how many times do those teeny-tiny wands go missing, leaving a bubble-blower without their essential tool? It happens … comes with the fragile bubble territory. Accidents happen, bubble machines go haywire, and bottles get tipped. But the part of bubble-blowing that’s not great is how quickly one flies through the bubble solution. And it doesn’t necessarily need to be a database application. This is an application that is owned and authored by you. Oracle Technology Network License Agreement for Java SEįor Personal, Development and other Users only. Oracle JDK and Oracle OpenJDK LTS License Guide For your convenience, the following graphic contains links to the various agreement types. And with it came this new and current licensing roadmap for this release. Oracle has also introduced its Oracle No-Fee Terms and Conditions License or NFTC License. While these “obsolete” versions can still be run – and many Miro Clients still do – the latest LTS release will be the one supported because of the second quotation above. Just like Java 11 rendered Java 10 and Java 9 obsolete. So, for example, the availability of Java 17 rendered Java 12 through Java 16 obsolete. Once a new feature release is made available, any previous non-LTS release will be considered superseded.” Per Oracle, it “… intends to make future LTS releases every two years meaning the next planned LTS release is Java 21 in September 2023.” And Oracle goes onto write, “For the purposes of Oracle Premier Support, non-LTS releases are considered a cumulative set of implementation enhancements of the most recent LTS release. Now Oracle has termed Java 17 to be a Long-Term Support release or an LTS release. Perhaps it’s best to depict this in an illustration. In addition to the JDK, the JRE and the JVM are also free-to-use. Now we have new information directly from our friends at Oracle Java. Originally, Miro blogged that this free-to-use release involved the Java Development Kit or JDK only. For Java 7, the last free public release is 1.7.0_80-b15.For Java 8, the last free public release is 1.8.0_202-b08 (where “b” means “build”).This is because all the versions preceding Oracle Java 17 are for-fee. What this means for you is that if you can, you might upgrade and then use Oracle Java 17 free of charge for internal applications.
